Director of Music
St John's was delighted to welcome Ben Woodward as Organist and Director of Music in January 2008.
Ben was born in Staffordshire, and was educated at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, and was then Organ Scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge. Immediately after Cambridge, Ben moved to New York City, and was Assistant Organist at Christ Church Greenwich, CT, and latterly Director of Music at St Mary's RC Church in Stamford, CT. Here he directed a professional choir and made several recordings including a world-premiere recording of a Mass by JD Heinichen (1683-1729), which he edited himself from source. Much renowned as a continuo player, he is a member of the New England Baroque Soloists, with whom he was visiting professor of harpsichord at Williams College, Boston USA, in 2008.
In 2011 he received his Masters in Opera from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
He is also Music Director of the prize-winning Buckland & Betchworth Choral Society, and accompanist of Wokingham Choral Society, as well as school organist for Northcote Lodge and Broomwood Hall Preparatory Schools.
Since starting at St John's, Ben has instituted a professional schola choir as well as our regular parish choir, has started a concert series 'Music @ the Heart of Fulham' and has founded Fulham Opera, who specialise in very large operas - most notably Wagner's Ring Cycle - in this, our relatively small space.
